After the hustle and bustle of the holiday season—with Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s gatherings—your home is probably ready for a thorough deep cleaning. Your floors, in particular, may have taken the brunt of the dirt, debris, spills, and scuffs from the additional crowds moving around your home.

While it may seem redundant to clean your home again since you probably deep-cleaned it before your guests arrived, holiday parties can take a toll on even the cleanest of homes and floors. The New Year is a great time to hit refresh and make a plan for cleaning your carpets and area rugs.

Address New Stains ASAP

With holiday cocktails flowing and plates of food being carried around the house, it’s no surprise to find a new stain on your carpets or rugs during a party. The key to maintaining your carpets and area rugs is to address these spills and stains right away.

As always, make sure to blot stains with a clean, absorbent cloth rather than rubbing them with harsh chemicals. If the spot persists after blotting, use a gentle stain remover or give us a call at Springer and we’ll professionally clean your carpets or rug!

Remove Debris by Vacuuming

It seems simple, but vacuuming soon after your final guest leaves will help prevent crumbs and dirt from damaging your carpet and rug fibers—plus you certainly don’t want to step on stray food bits! Make sure to vacuum in multiple directions to pick up all of the debris that may be hiding on your floors.

Use Baking Soda for Odor Control

If your area rug or carpets seem to be holding on to some of the smelly memories from your holiday gatherings (spilled food and drinks), baking soda can help. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over your rug or carpets and let it sit for about 30 minutes to an hour. Then vacuum it up to leave your floors smelling fresh and clean.

Much like stains, if odors persist, reach out to the professionals! If you haven’t professionally cleaned your floors in a while, it may take more than baking soda to remove tough smells.

Pay Special Attention to High-Traffic Areas

If you have an area rug or carpeting in an especially high-traffic area, the extra foot traffic from holiday parties can lead to worn or flattened rug fibers. For rugs, you can prevent uneven wear by rotating them to redistribute foot traffic. For carpets and rugs that look matted, use a soft-bristled brush to lift the fibers back into shape.
