We won’t beat around the bush: Your pets can often ruin your carpet floors with dirt, stains, scratches, built-up hair, and more. And while we love our pets, we don’t love replacing our carpets more than necessary. The good news is, you don’t have to sacrifice your furry friends or your flooring—just take a few extra steps and precautions to keep your floors fresh!

Vacuum Often & Thoroughly

While vacuuming isn’t a groundbreaking cleaning method, you may not be doing it frequently or thoroughly enough if you have pets. You should vacuum at least once a week (if not twice if you have multiple pets) and do it carefully by moving the vacuum in different directions over the carpet.

Regular vacuuming helps remove dirt, dust, dander, and pet hair from your carpets, which is important for freshness and the health of your carpet fibers. And don’t worry, there’s no such thing as vacuuming too much!

Take Steps to Discourage Scratching

Both cats and dogs are known to scratch at certain sections of carpet, which can cause it to fray or lift from the floor. Take steps to prevent your pet from scratching your carpet by providing scratching posts, clipping their nails regularly, or covering the area to break the habit.

Keep Your Pets Clean

For dogs and cats who spend any time outside, a lot of additional dirt and grime can be carried into your home and transferred to your floors. Make sure to wipe your pet’s paws as they come inside if you notice extra dirt or mud on them, and bathe them regularly.

The less dirty your pets themselves are, the less dirt they can transfer to your carpets!

Clean Messes ASAP

Be as proactive as you can about cleaning up any messes your pet makes on the carpet. Pet urine and vomit can soak into your carpet fibers and lead to smells and stains if they’re not cleaned and treated properly. If your pet has a lot of accidents, consider getting a handheld extractor to absorb liquids from your carpeting.

If you are using paper towels or rags to soak up messes, don’t press too hard, as this may force the liquid deeper into your carpet. Finally, have a reliable and carpet-safe cleaner on hand to help remove pet stains and odors.

Even with regular vacuuming, cleaning your pet’s paws, and quick spill solutions, you’ll likely still need routine professional carpet cleaning to maintain your floors when you have pets.
